PEMCO

In 1949 Robert J. Handy founded Public Employees Mutual Insurance Company to offer residence fire and burglary insurance and automobile collision, comprehensive, fire & theft insurance to Washington State residents. PEMCO Insurance is consistently rated at the top nationally by a leading consumer report. Located in Seattle, Washington and founded by school employees in 1949, PEMCO now has over 1,000 local employees. PEMCO is one of the larger auto insurers in Washington State with the smallest number of insurance commissioner complaints per dollar written. Safeco

Safeco began in 1923. Insurance executive Hawthorne K. Dent startled the established business community with a radical approach to insurance. Defying convention, he organized a company to combine the financial stability and responsibility of an investor-owned stock company with the preferred-risk underwriting and lower prices of a mutual or policy-owned company. He further violated the conventional wisdom of his day by basing the company in Seattle, far from the recognized insurance centers of the metropolitan Northeast. In 1953, the company's innovative spirit sent it in pursuit of an emerging technology that offered independent agents the tools to compete with the direct insurance writers - computer-based automation. That quest produced the Selective Auto and Fire Insurance Company of America. The name Safeco was derived from the company's acronym. The company continues to grow profitably and posted its best-ever net income result of $562 million in 2004. Also in 2004, Safeco completed the sale of its life and investments operations, shifting the company's full attention to property and casualty insurance.

Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MetLife)

MetLife Insurance MetLife sees its beginnings go back to 1863, when a group of New York City businessmen raised $100,000 to found the National Union Life and Limb Insurance Company. The new company insured Civil War sailors and soldiers against disabilities due to wartime wounds, accidents, and sickness. In 1868, after several reorganizations and five difficult years, the company decided to focus on the life insurance business. A new company was chartered to sell "ordinary" insurance to the middle class. The founders chose the name because they had been most successful in New York City, or the "Metropolitan" District. The company's stated long-term goal is to become the recognized leader throughout the world for relationship building, connectedness and caring in financial services - in the "giant league" with over 100 million people as MetLife customers by the year 2010. MetLife took a major step toward realizing this goal in 2005, when it acquired Travelers Life & Annuity and substantially all of Citigroup's international insurance businesses for $12 billion. Completed on July 1, 2005, the Travelers acquisition made MetLife the largest individual life insurer in North America based on sales, the second largest provider of retail annuities and the largest provider of institutional annuities.
